Here are some cool programs lined up this month for 20Somethings, starting with Game Night tonight!

20Somethings Game Night 
Calling all 20-Somethings! Join us for a free night of fun and games at the Zachary Branch tonight at 7. Bring a friend and your favorite game to share with the group or play one of ours. Choose from Bananagrams, Set, Trivial Pursuit, Wii games, and much more!

An Introduction to Micro RPG with Cthulhu Dark
Come to the Library this month to hang out with other 20-Somethings 19-30ish and enjoy a role playing game (RPG). Head over to the Main Library at Goodwood at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 13, to choose one of 12 investigators and risk your sanity to uncover the truth in this one-shot Cthulhu Dark Game. No experience is necessary, and newcomers are welcome for this very rules light system. Simply choose a name and occupation to start playing!

Get Your Game On!
If you enjoy video and board games and are looking for a way to meet other gaming enthusiasts ages 19-30ish, come to the Main Library at Goodwood at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, to play free board games such as Settlers of Catan and 7 Wonders and video games including Rock Band and Minecraft.

Introduction to Investing for 20Somethings
Calling all individuals ages 19-30ish looking to start investing for the first time! Financial advisors Bennett Blackledge and Patrick Talamo from Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Company will be at the Main Library at Goodwood at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 29, to give a free brief overview into the wide world of investing. You’ll find out the difference between bonds, mutual funds and trusts, why getting into the stock market might be beneficial, how you can make the most of your money, and more!

Get Your Game On! If you enjoy video and board games and are looking for a way to meet other game enthusiasts ages 18-30ish, join us at the Main Library at Goodwood tonight, October 14, and Tuesday, October 28, at 6 p.m. to play board games such as Settlers of Catan and 7 Wonders and video games such as Rock Band and Minecraft.

Halo Day: Sometimes you just need to kick back and enjoy an awesome video game. Come to the Baker Branch Library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, and get together with other 20-somethings to chill out with Halo on the Xbox.

Crafternoon: Wire-Wrapped Jewelry  Come hang out with other 20-somethings at the Main Library at Goodwood at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, to create wire-wrapped marble necklace pendants and button flower rings. All supplies provided.

We had a great time at Horror Movie Night last weekend and we have one more Halloween-themed event coming up:

‘Buffy’ Buffs Night  Are you a “Buffy” Buff? Then head over to the Main Library at Goodwood at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 23, to test your knowledge of all things Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We’ll be playing a trivia game covering all seven seasons of the popular television series.

Halloween Fun for All Ages

EBRPL is excited to offer a great line-up of special events to get you ready for Halloween! Here’s the list of events at our branches around the parish, everything for storytimes for children to craft and movie events for teens, 20-somethings, and adults! Don’t forget to bring along your goody sack. All events are free and open to the public, and the first one, a pumpkin decorating class for adults, is today at 1 p.m. at the Main Library at Goodwood (see below for details)!

FOR LITTLE GHOULS AND BOYS

All About Owls Story/Craft at River Center Branch

Do you love owls? If you do, you’ll want to hang out with other owl admirers ages 4-8 at the River Center Branch at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 11, to hear readings of several books about owls. Enjoy listening to stories like Jane Yolen’s Caldecott Award-winning Owl Moon, Il Sung Na’s A Book of Sleep and I’m Not Cute! by Jonathan Allen, which is about a baby owl who wants his friends to see him as the skilled hunter he is. Afterwards, kids can create an owl friend from craft foam and stick-on jewels.  Registration is required. (225) 389-4967.

Monster Mask Story/Craft at Baker Branch

The Baker Branch would like to wish author Ed Emberley a happy birthday! Children ages 5-8 can come to the Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 18, to celebrate by hearing a reading of his book Go Away, Big Green Monster! Afterwards, each child will make monster masks using plates and other craft materials. Spooky Ghosts Story/Craft at Baker Branch

Children ages 9-11 can join us at the Baker Branch at 4 p.m. Thursday, October 23, to hear readings of select horror stories from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark retold by Alvin Schwartz. Make a Halloween Greeting Card Story/Craft at Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch

Holler and scream, it’s time for Halloween! Children ages 3-7 should come to the spooky Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 25, to hear a reading of Click, Clack, Boo!: A Tricky Treat by Doreen Cronin. Afterwards, we’ll have fun celebrating Make A Difference Day by making paper Halloween cards for the Youth Oasis Children’s Shelter. Registration is required. (225) 274-4440.

Bats in the Library Story/Craft at River Center Branch

When Halloween is drawing near, creepy creatures do appear. Ghouls and ghosts cause a fright, witches and bats fly through the night! Witches cook up frogs for their brew and bats check out a book or two! Join other children ages 5-10 at the River Center Branch at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 25, to hear a reading of Bats in the Library by Brian Lies. Skeleton Bones Story/Craft at Eden Park Branch

Children ages 5-8 will listen to a reading of Me and My Dragon: Scared of Halloween by David Biedrzycki at the Eden Park Branch at 4:30 p.m. Monday, October 27. Afterwards, each child will create a Halloween costume craft. Registration is required. (225) 231-3240.

Halloween Pumpkin Story/Craft at Scotlandville Branch

Trick or treat! Join other kids ages 4-8 at the Scotlandville Branch at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, for a special Halloween-themed story time. Children will hear a reading of The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll and Scaredy-Cat, Splat! by Rob Scotton. Afterwards, we will paint a watercolor pumpkin craft. Registration is required. Monstergarten Story/Craft at Carver Branch

Kids ages 4-8 will want to drop by the Carver Branch at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, for a “spooktacular” story time and craft! We’ll hear a reading of Monstergarten by Daniel J. Mahoney and then create monster puppets using paper bags. Registration is required. (225) 389-7440.

Not-So-Spooky Spiders Story/Craft at Fairwood Branch

Eek! Spiders can be scary, but we’ll show you a different side of these eight-legged creatures. Children ages 6-10 are invited to the Fairwood Branch at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 30, to get a new perspective on the creepy crawlers. We will listen to a reading of Spider Stampede, the first book in the SWITCH series of books about bugs by Ali Sparkes. Kids will learn interesting facts about spiders and look at cool pictures from our non-fiction collection. Afterwards, you can make a fun spider and web craft. Registration is required. Skeleton Story/Craft at Bluebonnet Regional Branch

Halloween is the perfect time for skeletons to come out and roam. Children ages 5-11 are invited to the Bluebonnet Regional Branch at 4 p.m. Thursday, October 30, to hear a reading of stories about skeletons! Monster Resort Movie for Teens at Carver Branch

Teens can come to the Carver Branch at 4 p.m. Monday, October 6, to watch a movie in which Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count’s daughter Mavis.  (225) 389-7440.

Teen Halloween Movie at Central Branch

Teens can get ready for Halloween at the Central Branch at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, with a zombie love story! Bring your friends and come watch a movie about a zombie who falls in love with a human. (225) 262-2640.

Movable Mummies at Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch AND Main Library at Goodwood

Teens can come to the Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch at 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 14, to create moveable mummies using floral wire and linen fabric scraps. Paranormal Curse Takedown at Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch

Teens are invited to the Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 18, to watch an animated horror comedy film in which 11-year-old Norman Babcock speaks with the dead, including his late grandmother and other ghosts in his town, but almost no one believes him. Watch what happens when this misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse. (225) 274-4440.

Masquerade Mask Craft for Teens at Baker Branch

Hey teens, do you need a last-minute mask for Halloween? If you said yes, you’ll want to bring your buddies to the Baker Branch at 3 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, to use our supplies to create a unique masquerade mask. Teen Tech: Spooky Stop Motion Animation at Delmont Gardens Branch

It’s the perfect time to polish up our iPads, ready some props and try our hands at creating spooky short films in stop motion. Teens can come to the Delmont Gardens Branch at 4 p.m. Thursday, October 23, to create The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline movie-inspired short films. Registration is required. Halloween Movie Day for Teens at Fairwood Branch

Teens are invited to the Fairwood Branch at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 25, to enjoy a movie about three witch sisters who are resurrected in Salem, Mass., on Halloween night after being dead for three centuries. Pumpkins Come and Pumpkins Go, But A Jack- O-Lantern Steals the Show at Main Library at Goodwood

Adults can bring a festive fall spirit to the Main Library at Goodwood at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 2, to discover a variety of ways to decorate with pumpkins! Experienced holiday decorator Sheri Bell will demonstrate how to work with all pumpkin sizes, shapes, and colors. Book Review: X vs. Y

X vs. Y: A Culture War, a Love Story by Eve Epstein and Leonora Epstein. Reviewed by Louise Hilton. 

X vs. Y is a cultural study written by two sisters, Eve from Generation X, and Leonora from Generation Y. They use Generation X to describe people born in the mid-sixties to late-seventies while Generation Y or millennials refers to people born around the early 1980s to late-1990s. The Epstein sisters discuss the differences (and overlaps) of their respective generations when it comes to such topics as pop culture (with chapters devoted to Books, Music, and Movies), dating, and technology. With lots of Venn diagrams and other fun graphics showing the major pop culture references of each of these categories, X vs. Y is a quick and entertaining read.

As a Gen Y-er, I had to laugh reading Leonora’s essay “How Cher Horowitz Became Gen Y’s BFF” extolling the virtues of the movie Clueless: “1997 was a big year for me. I learned leg hair was a scourge to be eradicated at all costs, Jockey training bras were the bomb, and Clueless was the greatest movie ever.”

The authors conclude with an interesting point about the newest generation: “Because Gen Zers have unprecedented access to information and media from both the past and present, they’ll face a different sort of challenge: figuring out how to locate value in the sea of media and entertainments they’ve grown up in. Eve has nostalgia for Sesame Street because it was one of three TV shows she ever watched as a child; would she have felt the same way if her options had been effectively limitless?” (My guess is yes, she would have because – let’s face it – Sesame Street is one of the best things ever.)
