We have some powerful resources at the library that can help you track down obituaries. If you know the date of a local obituary, there is a good chance it can be found in our newspaper archives on microfilm, located at the Main Library. (Come to the Reference Desk and we’ll show you how.) If the obituary is after 1986 it can also be found online though our newspaper database Newsbank.
If you’re not sure of the date, we have the tools to track it down. Newsbank allows you to search obituaries that appeared in newspapers including The Advocate from 1986 to current, by name. This can be accessed from anywhere with a computer and your library card number.
We are currently working on our Advocate Obituary Project, which involves creating a searchable index online of obituaries that appeared pre-1986 in the Advocate and State Times Newspapers. The dates covered so far are 1952-59; 1960-69, 1970-79; 1980-91. These files can be downloaded and searched here.
If you have questions about finding obituaries please contact Library Information at 231-3750 or the Genealogy Department at 763-2283 (located at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch)
