Historic Newspapers

July 31, 2009

There is a great online collection of  historic newspapers hosted by the Library of Congress called Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. The newspapers are from 1880-1922 and make for a fascinating glimpse into the past. The classic advertisements are just as interesting as the stories themselves. The newspapers are easy to search by name, keyword and date.  The excellent presentation of the scanned newspapers allows you to zoom in and out, view as a PDF, download and print.

The Internet Archive Wayback Machine!

July 29, 2009

The Wayback Machine allows you to view archived web-pages preserved just as they were on the day they were published.  Want to see CNN.com on August 24, 2000? EBR Library homepage on December 7, 2000? You can! It’s a trip down memory lane and it’s pretty cool to see the difference in quality of webpages from then compared to now.

There are over 150 billion pages you can look at dating back to 1996. It’s great fun, unfortunately you can’t go back and recover the time you may waste browsing around the Wayback Machine!

Government Benefits and Assistance

July 27, 2009

Not sure where to start when it comes to finding out what benefits you may be entitled to? Try GovBenefits.gov the official government benefit site, a one stop shop for multiple agencies and their assistance programs. You can find a listing of benefits by subject area along with eligibility information. You can also take a useful questionnaire which will allow you to see if you are eligible for any of the many benefit programs.

The site contains links to related resources and state benefit programs. This site really helps to demystify what can seem a daunting and confusing process.
